The Unseen
Genre: Horror
Directed by: Geoff Redknap
Run time: 105 minutes
Rating: Unrated
Format: DVD
The Lowdown: Geoff Redknap’s The Unseen, a low-budget take on The Invisible Man, is a surprisingly effective and unexpectedly family-centric thriller that makes solid use of its limited special effects.
Aden Young plays Bob Langmore, an absentee father who returns to the family dynamic when he learns that his daughter, Eva (Julia Sarah Stone), needs help.
Bob has a problem, though. He’s slowly becoming invisible. As The Unseen plays out, and the history of Bob’s family is explored, it becomes more and more clear that his peculiar genetic condition might just be hereditary.
The Unseen is less concerned with jolts than most scary movies, and Redknap’s decision to keep the focus firmly on Bob and Eva’s relationship is a wise one.
And the pace does pick up in the third act, providing a nice companion watch to other recent sci-fi thrillers like Midnight Special that lean heavier on the bond between a parent and child instead of relying solely on jaw-dropping effects.
